Location Guide

Looking for the perfect location?
I’ve got you covered!

Below I’ve shortlisted my top recommendations for you.

While I wholeheartedly believe that all nature is beautiful, I know from experience that not every location is ideal for an elopement.

In this location guide, I’ve shortlisted my top recommended locations, with some suggestions of how they would work as a half-day or full-day itinerary.

What to consider when selecting your adventure

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing your elopement itinerary. Here are my top tips for choosing the right kind of adventure for you.

Privacy vs Ease of Access

For half-day coverage, the locations tend to be easier to access to maximise the time you have, but I have narrowed the options down to ones that still offer a degree of privacy and a feeling of isolation.

Route Choice

Whilst you are both fit and active, I do recommend being more conservative with the difficulty and distance for your elopement. This is to help you enjoy the day and spend more time IN the locations, not just hiking to reach them. Also, if you are in wedding clothes, we will be hiking more slowly to try to not get too sweaty.

Sunrise & Sunset

Sunrise and sunset generally have the best light, but not all locations are suited to sunrise/sunset. For the best sunrises and sunsets, you want to be in a higher elevation location, which means either long hikes in the dark or extending your coverage and staying overnight in a mountain hut. In the list below, I specify if a location works particularly well for sunrise or sunset, without needing to extend coverage.

This is not a photoshoot

Your elopement isn’t a photoshoot. I’ll be there to capture the adventure for you so that you have photos to treasure, but you’re here for an adventure and to immerse yourselves in the stunning natural beauty of the Alps. When choosing your adventure, think about what scenery you’ll enjoy exploring the most.

Half-Day Locations

Half-day coverage consists of 5 hours of consecutive photographic coverage. This is ideal for couples who want their adventure to be short and sweet. A half-day is enough for a short adventure, sharing your vows, and some beautiful photos in one primary location. If you want to capture getting ready, a first look, dinner or multiple locations, you’ll want to upgrade to full-day coverage.

1

Obernberg Lake

A tranquil alpine lake surrounded by lush green meadows and pine forests with tall mountains in the background.

  • Accessible year-round
  • Easy hike (30 minutes uphill to the lake)
  • Can be combined with Innsbruck for a full-day itinerary

Best time of day: Early morning or later in the afternoon offers better light. The location is surrounded by tall mountains, so it doesn’t get sunrise or sunset.

Privacy & seclusion: The location is popular with locals but isn’t as well-known with tourists. Weekends and during school vacations in the summer can be busier, but during the week, it’s rarely crowded.

Ease of access: 1-hour drive from Innsbruck plus 30-minute uphill hike.

While most people include Obernberg as part of a full-day itinerary, spending longer here and including other aspects to the day, such as getting ready or a second location, it is possible to just visit the lake by itself and fit it into a half-day.

Peaceful Lakeside location in a remote valley

It’s no secret that this location is one of my personal favourites. I’ve been hiking here for over 10 years and every time it takes my breath away.

Reaching the location is simple, but you do need a car, as it’s 1-hour from Innsbruck. There’s a large parking area, where the trailhead to the lake begins.

Hiking up to the lake takes around 20-30 minutes and is possible via two routes – a shorter but steeper hiking path through alpine meadows or a slightly longer gravel road that’s less steep.

The location is perfect in all seasons and all weather. In the winter months, the lake freezes over and there’s snow on the ground, but it’s still safe and easy to access with either snowshoes or hiking boots. In the summer months, the meadows are filled with wildflowers and grazing animals.

The locations is just as beautiful in bad weather as when it’s sunny. While other locations lose all views when the clouds come in, at the lake you’ve still got stunning nature all around you, even when the mountains are in the clouds.

Getting Here & Around

Obernberg is a pretty remote valley near the Italian border with very little infrastructure. If you want to feel really disconnected from the outside world, there are a small number of places to stay in the valley. But for those who want to enjoy the quiet beauty here but stay somewhere less remote, I recommend staying in/around Innsbruck or the Stubai Valley. On the elopement day, it may be possible to carpool together (depending on where you are staying).

Example Timeline

  • Meet at parking at Obernberg & hike to lake via meadows
  • Hike around the lake. Stop for vows & picnic at different spots. (3-4 hours)
  • Hike back down

2

Seefeld in Tirol

A pretty mountain town in summer and winter, with a ski lift up high for stunning mountain views.

  • Mountain lift – high views with easy access
  • Dramatic views
  • Can be combined with Innsbruck for a full-day itinerary

Best time of day: Early morning (first lift at 9 am) or later in the afternoon offer better light & fewer people. Last lift down 4:30 pm.

Privacy & seclusion: Popular ski & summer resort. There are always people around, but I wouldn’t call it crowded. Weekends and during school vacations in the summer can be busier.

Ease of access: 30-min drive or train from Innsbruck. Funicular train & cable car to the top. Not wheelchair-accessible.

Dramatic views without Long Hikes

Seefeld is a ski resort that sits on a sunny plateau just 30-minutes from Innsbruck by train. It’s a thriving ski town in winter and a popular hiking destination in summer.

Taking the Rosshütte furnicular train and cable car to the Seefelder Joch transports you from the valley to the mountains in around 20 minutes.

At the top you’ll find grassy slopes with dramatic mountains in the backdrop. While hiking isn’t necessary here, for couples who want to have a mini-adventure, it’s possible to hike for 30 mins to a nearby summit.

The location is accessible in summer from May to October, and is usually mostly snow-free by late May. In the winter it’s usually covered with snow from November/December.

Seefeld can be chosen as a stand-alone location, or combined with other nearby locations or activities to make it a full day adventure.

Getting Here & Around

Seefeld is easy to reach by train from Innsbruck (or a 30-minute drive) but since it is a popular summer and winter destination with everything you would want in the town, you could also choose to stay in one of the great hotels or apartments up here.

Regional trains connect Seefeld with Innsbruck and also Munich (via Garmisch-Partenkirchen).

Example Timeline

  • Take lift up
  • Hike across to the Seefelder Spitze. Stop along the way for photos, vows. Summit champagne.
  • Hike back & take lift down

3

Stubai Valley

A beautiful valley with waterfalls, a glacier and stunning mountain views.

  • A variety of different landscapes
  • Mountain lift & roadside locations
  • Can be extended to a full day with longer hikes

Best time of day: Early morning or later in the afternoon offers better light & fewer people.

Privacy & seclusion: Grawa waterfall can be crowded, but it’s manageable for a short stop. Weekends and during school vacations in the summer are the busiest. On the mountains, there will be people, but it’s usually not hard to find quiet spots.

Ease of access: The end of the Stubai valley is approx. 1 hour from Innsbruck.

Waterfalls, glaciers, Lakes, and mountain lifts

The Stubai valley is perfect for giving you a variety of mountain scenery in a relatively small area.

Stubai is one of the few options where you can visit several different locations as part of a half-day coverage.

Possibilities inclulde:
– Grawa waterfall & the Ruetz river
– Stubai Glacier middle station with a short hike to an alpine lake (bottom images)
– Schlick 2000 with views of the Kalkkogel
– Elfer (with views into the Pinnis Valley)

There are a number of mountain lifts in this area, such as the Stubai Glacier (with snow at the top), Elfer (Neustift) and Schlick 2000 (Fulpmes). Taking one of the mountain lifts means you get a contrasting view to the photos in the valley by the waterfall and river, but with easy access with the mountain lift.

The Stubai valley could be a half-day (visiting just the waterfall and one lift) or a fall day, taking in multiple locations and mountain lifts*.

*Please note that extra tickets are required for the lifts. They cost between €30-€55 per person, per lift.

Schlick 2000

Elfer

Getting Here & Around

The entrance to the Stubai Valley is a 30-minute drive from Innsbruck (1 hour to the glacier at the end of the valley). There are a number of towns in the valley with a great selection of accommodation, should you choose to stay in the Stubai valley instead of in Innsbruck. The largest town is Neustift, but Fulpmes is also a convenient town with a ski lift nearby.

Example Timelines

Example 1:

  • Park at Stubai Glacier. Take lift up to middle station.
  • Hike from Dresdnerhütte to lake. Vows. Continue hiking up to small summit (Egesengrat).
  • Hike & lift back down. Kaffee & Kuchen at Grawa Alm (opening times TBC)

Example 2:

  • Take Elfer or Schlick 2000 cable car up.
  • Short hike to views
  • Cable car back down. Drive to Grawa waterfall.
  • Photos around waterfall & river.

4

Kaiserbachtal – Ranggen Hochalm

A beautiful valley behind the stunning Wilder Kaiser mountains

  • Possible sunrise hike location
  • Mountain hut in the valley for post-elopement Kaffe & Kuchen

Best time of day: Early morning or later in the afternoon offers better light & fewer people.

Privacy & seclusion: The Kasterbachtal is a popular location at weekends. Most people hike to the Stripsenjochhaus, leaving the trail to the Ranggen Hochalm much quieter.

Ease of access: Parking at the trailhead (Griesneralm). Mostly Forstweg.

Hiking:
Distance: 4 miles
Elevation gain: 1410 ft
Hiking time: 3-4 hours

Sunrise Hike, Dramatic Peaks

This is my top suggestion for a sunrise hike. The Kaiserbachtal is approx. 30 mins from Kitzbühel. There is a private toll road that takes you to a large parking area at the Griesneralm at the end of the valley.

From the parking, you take a trail opposite from the steep faces of the Wilder Kaiser, which rises up the grassy hillside to the Ranggen Hochalm.

From the same starting point as the above hike (Griesneralm) you also have another hike option, that goes up to the Stripsenjochhaus. Howeverm because the hut is still open in October, you won’t have the privacy you would at this location.

The sunrise in this spot is approximately 7:15 am, so I would recommend starting the hike at 6am. The first part would be in the dark, but the blue hour before the sunrise should also be beautiful.

For this hike, it would be possible to hike in your wedding clothes, but if you wanted, you could also carry them up and change on the mountainside (if you wanted to share a first look on the mountain).

There are a lot of birch trees around here, so I would expect really vivid fall colors around here in October.

Getting Here & Around

The Kaiserbachtal is approx. 40 mins from Kitzbühel or 25 mins from St Johann. There is a private toll road that takes you to a large parking area at the Griesneralm at the end of the valley.

Example Timeline

  • Meet at parking at Griesneralm
  • Hike up to Ranggen Hochalm. Sunrise. Exchange vows. Picnic breakfast.
  • Hike back down. Kaffee & Kuchen at Griesneralm

Full-Day Locations

Full-day coverage consists of up to 12 hours of photographic coverage, with the option to “pause for 2 hours” for a break during the day. With a full day, you open up the options of longer hikes to more secluded areas, as well as the opportunity to visit more a few locations during the course of the day.

1

Karwendel / Lamsenjochhütte

Region: Karwendel Nature Park
Hiking difficulty: Moderate – good physical fitness required

  • Mountain hut in a protected nature reserve
  • Dramatic rocky backdrop with lush green meadows
  • Amazing location for alpine animals

Best time of day: This location has lovely light in the morning and the evening (when the sky is clear).

Privacy & seclusion: The hut is very popular, but is most busy at weekends and in high season. Outside of this, we will probably see other hikers, but crowds are unlikely.

Ease of access: Parking at the trailhead at the Gramai Alm (toll road). The closest town is Pertisau.

Hiking:
Distance to the hut: 4.5 km
Elevation gain: 700m
Hiking time: 2 hours

Full loop: 11.5km, 950m D+
Hiking time: 6-10 hours (including all the stops)

Breathtaking views in All Directions

When people ask me what my favorite hike of all time is, this one is a top contender.

The Lamsenjoch Hut sits beneath a dramatic wall of limestone rock, surrounded by green alpine meadows. But it’s not just the backdrop that makes it special. Because this area is part of the Karwendel nature reserve, there are wild animals all around – if you are lucky you might see Ibex (Steinböcke) and Chamois (Gämse).

There is a small seasonal body of water up here (it’s more of a pond than a lake). However, it can dry up during long, dry spells.

While staying in the hut makes sunrise and sunset easier, and breaks the route up, since you are both fit, I think you could manage this route in a day. However, both sunrise and sunset would be a challenge, as that would involve long stretches of hiking in the dark.

Hiking difficulty: moderate – see trail map below.
For sunrise: ascent in red, descent in green. Sunset reverse.

Where to stay before/after: Gramai Alm

Getting Here & Around

The Karwendel can be reached from many directions, but for the Lamsenjochhütte, the best place is from Pertisau. If you want to treat yourselves to a beautiful hotel, the Gramai Alm is right at the start of the hike.

Example Timelines

Sunrise:

  • 4:30 am – Start hike from Gramai Alm
  • 6:30 am – Reach sunrise location. Change into wedding clothes
  • Vows & photos around the Lamsenjoch.
  • 9 am – Picnic breakfast (or in hut if open to public)
  • 10 am – Hike to Gramaihochleger via Binsalm-Hochleger – Binssattel (2-3 hours with photo stops)
  • 1pm – Photos around Gramai Hochleger. Stop at Almhütte if open.
  • 2:30 pm – Hike back to Gramai Alm
  • 4 pm – Kaffee & Kuchen on the terrace. Alternatively, drive to Pertisau & visit cafe/lake.

Sunset:

  • 6:30 am – Sunrise walk at the lake in Pertisau
  • 9 am Breakfast then hair & makeup (hair & makeup takes approx. 2 hours)
  • 1 pm – Hike to Lamssenjochhütte from Gramai Alm (2 hours). Kaffee & Kuchen at the hut.
  • 4:30pm – Final light before sun goes behind the mountains. Maybe alpenglow after.
  • 6pm – Hike back down to Gramai Alm same way we came up
  • 8pm – Dinner at Gramai Alm/Hotel in Pertisau

2

Kühtai

Region: Sellrain
Seclusion level: Generally quiet.

  • Moderate hike
  • Lift closes in Sept so fewer people likely in October
  • Close to Innsbruck
  • Bring your swimwear if you want a cold plunge!

Best time of day: This location has the potential for nice late-afternoon/evening light, around 4-5 pm.

Privacy & seclusion: Kühtai is rarely crowded in summer, and since the lifts will be closed by this date, I don’t expect to meet many other people.

Ease of access: Parking at the trailhead. 30-min drive from Innsbruck.

Hiking:
Distance: 8km
Elevation gain: 480m
Hiking time: 5-8 hours (including all the stops)

3 Lakes Hike

Just outside Innsbruck is the Sellrain valley and the village of Kühtai. This area is a ski resort in winter but in summer it’s pretty quiet, with just a few hikers coming here to explore the surroundings.

The “3 Lakes Hike” is a relatively easy hike that takes you on a tour of four (!) stunning alpine lakes.

The lakes can be access more easily using a chairlift, but this only runs until the end of September. With the chairlift being closed, the trails will almost certainly be much quieter.

Due to its high elevation, early season snow is possible in Kühtai.

Getting Here & Around

Kühtai is 30-40 minute drive from Innsbruck. There are hotels in Kühtai, but many don’t open in summer (that’s how quiet it is).

Example Timeline

  • Breakfast & getting ready at hotel
  • Drive to Kühtai.
  • Hike around lakes. Multiple stops for vows, champagne, picnic, views (6-8 hours on the trail).
  • Return to hotel at end of day

3

Kalkkogel Views
Salfeins Lake + Hoadl

A 2-part day, with sunrise and sunset overlooking the “Dolomites of Tirol”

  • Great sunrise + sunset location
  • Mountain lift closed in Oct – so trails should be quieter
  • Dramatic views

Best time of day: Mornings and evenings have the best light. I would recommend Salfeins for sunrise and Hoadl for sunset, but both could also work the opposite way around.

Privacy & seclusion: People often (illegally) camp at Salfeins, as it is a popular sunrise/sunset spot, so there is no guarantee of privacy. I’ve yet to encounter many people up at Hoadl in the evenings.

Ease of access: Both trailheads are a 30-min drive from Innsbruck. You could stay in the village of Axams if you prefer to be in a village rather than in the city.

In theory, either of these locations could be chosen for a half-day elopement, but because the hiking take up most of the coverage time, that only leaves you with a short amount of time for everything else (vows, celebrating, prosecco, picnic, etc).

Salfeins

Just outside Innsbruck, at the foot of the Kalkkogel mountains, which are known as the “Dolomites of Tirol” there is a stunning little mountain ridge.

At the top is a grassy plateau and a small pond, that, when the light hits it correctly, can give stunning reflections of the mountains around it. If the weather has been particularly dry, the pond can dry up, but the location is stunning nevertheless.

Salfeins hike:

Distance: 5 km (out and back)
Elevation gain: 550m
Hiking time: 3 hours (not including stops)

Sunrise time: 6:30 am
Sunset time: 5:30 pm

Hoadl

Axamer Lizum is one of Innsbruck’s famous winter ski areas, known for the Olympics. This area is right at the foot of the Kalkkogel.

Because the ski lift closes at the end of September, this location becomes much quieter. That does mean you need to hike up (rather than taking the lift) but the scenery is lovely.

Hoadl hike:

Distance: 8.5 km (out and back)
Elevation gain: 800m
Hiking time: 4 hours (not including stops)

Sunrise time: 6:30 am
Sunset time: 5:30 pm

Example Timeline

4:30 am – Start hike to Salfeins (2 hours easy pace)
6:30 am – Sunrise
8:30 am – Hike back down
BREAK*
1 pm – Start hike to Hoadl (2 hours easy pace)
3 pm – Photos & exploring around the top. Vows, champagne, picnic.
5:30 pm – Sunset
6:30 pm – Hike back down
8 pm – Drive back to accommodation
* These timings are approximate. The break is longer than 2 hours, but that’s ok, since it’s close enough for me to drive home inbetween.

4

MutterbergerSee

Region: Stubai
Seclusion level: Generally quiet.

  • Moderate-challenging hike
  • Lift closes in Sept so fewer people likely in October
  • Risk of snow in October

Best time of day: Because this is a longer hike, and we will use the lift to start, so no sunrise/sunset option.

Privacy & seclusion: This is a moderately popular hike in peak summer. Outside of that, it is fairly quiet.

Ease of access: Parking at Stubai Glacier valley station. Lift to middle station to start hike.

Hiking:
Distance: 9km
Elevation gain: 485m (1020m descent)
Hiking time: 6-9 hours (including all the stops) (4-5 hours just hiking)

Alpine Lake Fed by Glaciers

In the area close to the Stubai Glacier ski resort, there is a stunning alpine lake, the Mutterbergersee. The lake is fed by glacial melt, and feeds waterfalls below it. On a clear, calm day, the reflections in the lake can be incredible.

To make the hike slightly shorter, I recommend taking the lift up to the middle station (Dresdnerhütte) and hiking from there. The distance is similar but this saves around 400m of ascent. The route via the Dresdnerhütte also passes another small lake (mentioned in the half day itinerary).

Due to its high elevation, early season snow is possible in Stubai.

Past adventures to the

Mutterbergersee

Getting Here & Around

Stubai Glacier is 45 mins – 1 hour from Innsbruck. Alternatively, you could stay in Neustift im Stubaital, if you wanted to be deeper in the mountains. The Stubaital is one of my favourite places to hike, with so many options. It is also sometimes possible to do early-season skiing on the glacier in October (season start snow-depending).

Example Timeline

8:30am – First lift up Stubai Glacier
Hike via smaller lake under the Egesengrat
Continue to Mutterbergersee. Vows.
Hike to another spot for champagne/prosecco
Hike to another spot for picnic
Back to valley
Option to stop at Grawa waterfall or along river on the way home if still light

5

Rofanspitze

Region: Rofan (Achensee)
Seclusion level: Generally quiet on weekdays.

  • Moderate hike
  • Lakes, cliffs, summit, alpine meadows
  • Lift-fed

Best time of day: During lift operating hours.

Privacy & seclusion: This is a moderately popular hike in peak summer weekends. Outside of that, it is fairly quiet.

Ease of access: Parking at the lift station in Maurach am Achensee.

Hiking:
Distance: 11 km
Elevation gain: 650m
Hiking time: 4 hours (c. 7 hours with stops)

A little bit of everything

This stunning hike in the Rofan mountains passes through alpine meadows and an alpine lake, to a summit with incredible ridge views. I love this hike as the scenery is really varied.

The hike begins at the top station of the Rofan cable car, so can only be done during the cable car operating time.

There are some lakes/ponds/bodies of water along the route.

Cable car runs from 8am until 4pm (Summer 2026 TBC)

Mountain hut (Erfurterhütte) or Mauritzalm option for Kaffee & Kuchen.

Getting Here & Around

The Rofan moutains are around 1 hour from Innsbruck, next to Achensee. They are accessible by cable car. For this location, I would recommend staying around Achensee. Pertisau and Archenkirch are the nicest towns on the lake.

Example Timeline

8 am – First lift up
Hike to first look location and change
Continue to hike in wedding clothes, making stops
Find quiet spot for vows
Champagne at summit
Hike to another spot for picnic or hike back to the Erfurterhütte (next to cable car) for Kaffee & Kuchen
Back to valley (last lift 4pm)
Option to stop at lake for more photos/visit a cafe

6

Schlicker See

Region: Stubaital
Seclusion level: Generally quiet on weekdays.

  • Challenging hike
  • Lakes, cliffs, summit, alpine meadows
  • Lift-fed

Best time of day: During lift operating hours.

Privacy & seclusion: This is a moderately popular hike in peak summer weekends. Outside of that, it is fairly quiet.

Ease of access: Parking at the lift station for Schlick 2000. Cable car to starting point. Option to hike back to valley in case of missing the last lift (forstweg).

Hiking:
Distance: 12 km (with lift both directions)
Elevation gain: 750m
Hiking time: 5 hours (c. 8+ hours with stops)

A Challenging hike with stunning views

The ski resort of Schlick 2000 is on the south side of the Kalkkogel, in the Stubaital.

The hike begins at the top of the Kreuzjochbahn, following the ridgeline along to the Niederburgstall. It continues over the Schlicker Shartl to the Seejöchl, with views to the Schlicker See. To make a circular route, we can hike down to the lake, and continue to the Starkenburgerhütte for Kaffee & Kuchen, before returning back to the Kreuzjoch.

These trails are small, narrow, slippery (loose gravel) and often quite exposed, so I have marked the difficulty as challenging. After in heavy rain or snowfall I would not recommend it.

Should we miss the last lift (I did when I did this hike with a friend many years ago), it is possible to hike on a forstweg back. to the valley.

Getting Here & Around

The cable car for Schlick is in the village of Fulpmes, a short drive into the Stubaital. It’s approx. 30 minutes from Innsbruck or 15 minutes from Neustift, so you could stay in Innsbruck or in the Stubaital.

Example Timeline

8 am – First lift up (Summer times TBC)
Hike to Seejöchl. Change into wedding clothes.
Find quiet spot for vows at lake
Hike to Starkenburgerhütte for Kaffee & Kuchen
Hike back to Kreuzjoch. If time, prosecco at the bar.
Back to valley (last lift 4pm) – Alternatively, hike back down to valley (+2 hours)
