If your dream is standing amongst wild landscapes on your wedding day, you might be planning an adventure wedding or elopement. Perhaps your plan is to hike to an amazing clifftop location or climb a mountain for a sky-high vow ceremony. Whilst an adventure wedding can certainly take less planning than a traditional wedding, one thing that certainly needs to be considered is how to choose an adventure wedding dress.

How To Choose An Adventure Wedding Dress

Choosing a dress for your adventure wedding can sometimes be a little more complicated than if you were planning a more traditional wedding. As an adventure wedding photographer, I’ve seen what dresses work best for adventure weddings, so today I’m here to give you my top tips on choosing an adventure wedding dress:

1. Think About What Activities You’ll Be Doing

If you’re planning a 5 mile hike to reach your wedding ceremony, think about the route you’re going to be taking. Will you have to climb over rocks or fences and need to easily lift the dress up. Or are you planning on hitting the slopes and snowboarding in your dress and might need a dress without a train so it doesn’t get caught under your backside edge? You’ll need to think about all of this when you start dress shopping. Unlike a traditional wedding, you’re going to need a dress that you can easily and comfortably move in all day, without it getting in the way.

2. Ask Yourself If You’re Ok With A Bit Of Dirt

Knowing what activities you’re going to be doing on your wedding day, you might need to accept the fact that your dress is very likely to get dirty and possibly damaged. And if that is the case, you might not want to spend a few thousand on a brand new couture gown. Ask yourself how much you are willing to spend, knowing that the dress may well end up looking like it’s been on a great adventure. As long as you feel amazing, it doesn’t matter how much it cost you, so check out sample sales at boutiques, look at online shops such as Etsy, Lulus or ASOS and even look out for pre-loved bargains.

3. When Will You Be Getting Dressed?

If your dream wedding location is a half-day hike, you might prefer packing your dress in your rucksack and putting it on once you arrive at your final destination. If you do decide to go down that route (pun intended), you’ll want a dress that’s lightweight and easy to pack and something that won’t get too creased when it’s packed inside a rucksack. After all, you’ll still want to look amazing in the photos.

4. What Will You Be Wearing Under Or Over It?

Linking with what activities you’ll be doing, don’t forget to think about what else you might be wearing on your wedding day. Every bride needs to choose her accessories carefully and an adventure bride is no different. Think about if you’ll be wearing any particular safety equipment, sportswear or footwear and how that might impact your choice of dress.
