If you are considering eloping, or you know someone that already has, you might have heard people voice their opinions on elopements. Maybe it’s got you asking yourself, “is it selfish to elope?” Whilst there will always be some people that might say that it is, I believe eloping can actually be the opposite of selfish. Keep reading to find out why.

Is It Selfish To Elope?

Let’s look at traditional weddings for a moment. Some people say elopements are selfish, but what about traditional weddings? Are traditional weddings selfless? As a wedding guest at a traditional wedding, you might be expected to:

* Purchase a wedding gift or contribute to a honeymoon fund

* Travel out of town and have to pay for travel & accommodation

* Buy a new outfit

* Take time off work

* Attend & contribute to pre-wedding events such as a bridal shower or hen party

* Arrange child care

What about the families of the couple and the wedding party. Family members might feel pressured to contribute financially or or to take on organisational responsibilities. Perhaps your wedding party will feel obliged to organise your bachelor or bachelorette party.

So What About Eloping?

I think you can argue that eloping is in so many ways, the opposite of being selfish.

When you choose to elope, you’re not asking anyone to do anything other than support your decision and let you make that commitment to one another in a way that feels like the right way for you. If your friends and family want to join your after you’ve eloped for a special celebration, of course they can, but there are much fewer expectations on both sides to have to consider.

Whatever you decide to do, choosing to elope or choosing to have a traditional wedding, the decision should be the right decision for you and your partner.
